David Ortiz

Executive Director

David Ortiz teaches orchestra at Judson High School, and is also an accomplished film/video game composer, arranger, trumpeter, published author. David was named to the All-Region band from 1994-2001, and All-Area Band in 2000 and 2001. After graduating from Crystal City High School, he moved to San Marcos, TX to continue studying trumpet under Dr. Keith Winking at Texas State University. There, David served as lead/principal trumpet in the University’s top ensembles including the marching band, Salsa del Rio, Jazz Ensemble, Funk Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Texas State Symphony Orchestra and Mariachi Nueva Generacion. David is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia American Collegiate Music Fraternity.

During his time playing lead trumpet with Salsa Del Rio, the ensemble won Premios A La Musica Latina’s “Best Salsa/Merengue Group of the Year” in 2005, 2006, and 2007 and a coveted Downbeat award in 2007 for “Best Blues, Pop and Rock Recording”.

David continued his professional career as a mariachi after earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Psychology from Texas State in 2006.

David has had an extensive and diverse career in case management. David has engaged in serving populations most negatively impacted by severe mental illnesses, but has also worked in homelessness, patient advocacy and Immigration as it pertains to the safe and timely release of unaccompanied children through the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Musically, David has credits as a composer, arranger, trumpeter, engineer and producer, beginning with his founding of MES. Additional credits include recording trumpet with The OneUps, Vanessa Del Fierro, The John Davenport, Grupo Fantasma, Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution, Mariachi Rock Revolution and Jeremy Messersmith. David has shared the stage with such artists as Mariachi Vargas, Ruben Ramos, Metalachi, Donkey Kong Country and Battletoads composer David Wise. David has composing and arranging credits with Grupo Fantasma, Mariachi Rock Revolution, Riot Games’ League of Legends, Drinkbox Studios’ Guacamelee! 2, and is the musical composer/musical supervisor on Town of Zoz, currently in development.

David was awarded a grant from the City of San Antonio Department of Multicultural Arts in 2021 and in 2022 fulfilled the grant with his production “Musica Inmortal”, a combination Album/Short Film that he wrote, produced, edited and directed. David was again awarded the grant in 2025 and is leveraging support from the grant to realize his vision of providing access to education for disadvantaged youth.

David is also a published author having contributed writings to Hagen’s Alley’s “Super Nintendo Compendium” and “Hidden Gaming Gems: Generation by Generation”.

Being a dedicated father to his son Lorenzo has taken him away from gaming for the time being but has enjoyed playing Final Fantasy VII Remake with his son when there is time. .

Eric Cervera

Director of Development

A San Antonio native, Eric holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing from UTSA.

Eric Cervera has been immersed in mariachi music since 1990, performing with groups such as Mariachi Los Arrieros de Laredo, Mariachi Festival de Oscar A. Garza, and Mariachi Azul de San Antonio. His love for the art form extended to the stage, where he was part of the cast of American Mariachi at The Public Theater of San Antonio.

Eric came to MES as a fan wanting to participate in an experimental project; he has also spearheaded several extremely successful social media campaigns for the ensemble. Eric brings his musicianship on violin as well as his infectious personality and unrivaled showmanship, and is a valued asset for the MES family.

Outside of music, he is a Marketing and Sales Executive in the health insurance industry.

Eric has been married to his wife, Andrea, since 2000, and they share a deep love for the performing arts with their daughter, an aspiring musical theater actor.
